Ticket-of-Leave Meeting Room
Somercotes was settled in 1823 and is an estate of significant Australian Historic and Cultural Heritage. Among the many National Estate and National Trust classified buildings on the property is the Ticket-of-Leave building.

Part of this building now has been faithfully converted to a Meeting Centre. The census of 1842 shows that Somercotes had 22 people living there, of whom "but five were free".

The 'Ticket of Leave' building

In Tasmania's days as a penal colony, most of the labourers employed on farms were convicts who, having served half a sentence of transportation and stayed out of trouble, had been rewarded with a ticket of leave which enabled them to obtain employment and travel within a restricted area. The Ticket-of-Leave building at Somercotes is where the unmarried convict workers once lived.
