Notes for Visitors
To ensure that you enjoy your stay in the historic cottages
at Somercotes Estate at Ross please find the following for your information.
Firstly, when you have checked in, we do respect your privacy so please
contact us should you require additional assistance.
- Dinner delivered to your cottage can be arranged but must be pre-booked.
- Please enquire with our family if you require access to email, fax
or a safe.
- If you are staying for multiple nights we change your towels every
two days and sheets are changed on request. Breakfast provisions are
provided daily. If you are wishing to use the communal laundry facilities
please ask a family member. It is situated near Standaloft cottage.
Laundry facilities include — washing machine, clothes drier,
iron and ironing board and a First Aid Kit should the basics be required
for whatever reason.
- Your beds are fitted with wool doonas or wool blankets and wool pillows — all
for your comfort. Extra blankets are provided should you need them.
Extra bathroom accessories have been placed in your cottage should
you require any of these.
- You are welcome to take a stroll with the Somercotes booklet in-hand,
which includes notes on the family history and the significant National
Estate and National Trust buildings. A map of the buildings is in
the centre of the booklet, which is in our presentation folder. There
is one of these in each cottage. For those wishing to walk a little
further, there is a cherry orchard being developed with many varieties
of juicy, fresh cherries during the picking season, which is from December
through to February. Whilst visiting the orchard you may see some native
birds such as hawks, magpies, noisy minors, green rosellas and wattle
birds, just to name a few. If you stroll further up Horton Hill, you
will experience magnificent views of the valley known as the Argyle
Plains — a must
for the keen photographer and walker. The stars that shine brightly
in the night sky are also a sight to see.
- A full size tennis court in the homestead gardens is available for
the energetic guests. Please enquire with the family for tennis racquets
and tennis balls.
- Try some trout fishing in the Macquarie River, which is easily accessible
from your cottage either to fish or a leisurely walk. You may sight
a platypus. Enquire with the family for directions and some fishing
gear if you don’t have your own. There is a gas BBQ under cover
to cook that trout from the river or other meals.
- A Northern Tasmanian phone book is in each cottage for your convenience.
- An appointment can be arranged for a body massage — either
in the comfort of your cottage or just a short drive into the village
of Ross.
- In the case of early or late check-in or check-out by guests, we
are able to store your luggage.
- We are experienced and happy to make your forward accommodation or
tour bookings as a complimentary service. Just let us know.
Have a great stay.
The Riggall Family.
